SUMMARY:Pag summer carnival
DESCRIPTION:The Pag Carnival is one of the most cherished traditions of the island’s community — a time for gathering\, celebration\, and preserving the cultural heritage that “Pažani” proudly uphold. Its history stretches back for centuries\, even being mentioned in the Statute of Pag Municipality from 1433. \nToday\, the town celebrates both a Winter Carnival (held since at least 1884 in its current form) and a Summer Carnival (the oldest in Croatia\, dating from 1959).\nCentral to the festivities are unique local customs such as Rićavac\, Paška robinja\, Paško kolo\, traditional songs\, the “funeral” and burning of Marko\, folk costumes\, and Paški tanac. \nSince 1998\, the Carnival Association Markova kumpanija — a proud FECC member — has worked to safeguard and promote these traditions\, engaging both locals and visitors in the vibrant spirit of Pag. Through parades\, concerts\, exhibitions\, children’s festivals\, and cultural exchanges with other carnival cities\, the association has brought Pag’s carnival heritage to national and international audiences. \nWhether in the depths of winter or under the summer sun\, the Pag Carnival transforms the town into a stage of colour\, music\, and joy — an unmissable highlight of Croatia’s carnival calendar. \nContact: \nKarnevalska Udruga Markova Kumpanija:  markova.kumpanija@gmail.com \nTZ Grada Paga : direktor@tzgpag.hr

SUMMARY:Carnival of Vevcani
DESCRIPTION:The Carnival of Vevcani\, older than 1.400 years\, is an interesting mix of paganism and modernism. It is held on 13 and 14 January (on the eve of and at the first day of the New Year\, according to the old calendar). The main characteristics of the carnival are: archaism\, secretiveness and improvisation. According to its specific features\, it differs from all other carnivals in the world. The arena of the carnival events is the whole village of Vevcani\, which turns in a boundaryless theatre of its kind during the carnival\, where each house\, each street is a scene onto which disguised people perform their plays like real actors. There are three traditional masks: bridegroom and bride\, August the Stupid and musicians. Remaining masks are\, in essence\, major or minor carnival groups\, who\, through their costumes\, gesticulations and movements usually ridicule and point to phenomena and persons of the social life. The role of August the Stupid is particularly distinct. Young people\, full of energy bear this mask and communicate with the audience by peculiar movements and gesticulations\, as well as by specific screams. During the carnival\, the disguised participants enjoy all possible freedom and passion to “place the world upside down”\, freedom in which the creativity of the spirit is expressed\, as well as the sense for improvisation\, criticism and sarcasm. Officially\, women do not participate in the carnival. Yet\, they do disguise\, but\, compared to men\, do not take off the masks at the end. In 1993\, the Carnival of Vevcani and Vevcani itself\, became a member of the World Federation of Carnival Cities\, in which Vevcani\, despite of the great dissatisfaction extended by Greece\, enrolled the Republic of Macedonia under its constitutional name. Closely after that\, Vevcani raised the initiative for the national carnival association\, covering also Strumica\, Prilep and other places endeavoring to revive the carnival tradition. The first President of the Macedonian Carnival Association was the Mayor of Vevcani Vasil Radinoski. The Carnival of Vevcani\, through its representatives and carnival groups\, has been presented in other places in the world as well\, and foreign carnival groups are presented in Vevcani. The Carnival of Vevcani was the main inspiration for the seminar held in 1996\, “on the spot”\, under the title “Customs under masks”\, in which local and foreign ethnological experts took part. They presented to the public the main features of the Carnival: traditional masks\, the appearance of individuals from the social life\, as well as elements composing the original contents of the custom. Of course\, they made their observation of the innovations incorporated into the traditional custom. The Carnival of Vevcani\, a theatre without walls of its kind\, has never experienced the postponement of a performance. From one year to another\, it attracts increased interest from the public\, both in the country and in the world. In addition to the actors themselves\, its affirmation also owes to numerous journalist teams\, cameramen\, and photo-reporters. In the early ‘80s\, Vevcani was visited by the French ethnologist and photo-reporter Jean-Mari Stenlen\, who\, in 1984\, in the Paris Bobur\, as well as in other cultural centres of Europe\, presented the story about Vevcani in front of the cultural public. Through his story\, he made the carnival happenings immortal\, applying the sense of an artist. He recorded the masks and the events in a spontaneous manner and with great skill\, offering to the world a document on Vevcani’s distinctness\, in which the models exist in the perfect simplicity of Vevcani’s environment. Several photos of original masks from the Carnival of Vevcani by this author were included in the great encyclopedia of European carnivals\, published in Paris in 1986. On the occasion of the carnival\, people from Vevcani come home from all over the world\, in order to take part in the unique performance\, abundantly drowned in red wine\, which has enough room for every goodwill guest possessing a carnival spirit. \nContact Information \nMunicipality of Vevcani\nPhone: +389 (0)46 784-640\nE-mail: contact@vevcani.gov.mk vevcani.gov.mk\nAddress: Општина Вевчани\, 6335 Вевчани\, Македонија\n

In its modern form\, it began in 1982\, initiated by three masked groups – the Halubje Bell Ringers\, Pehlin’s Party People\, and the “No Problem” group – with the support of the Tourist Board. \nThe program features a series of cultural\, entertainment\, and sporting events\, culminating in the Children’s Carnival Parade and the International Carnival Parade. With decades of tradition\, the Opatija Carnival transforms the city into a stage of imagination\, satire\, and shared joy for over a month. \nTwo signature events steal the spotlight: \n\nChildren’s Carnival Parade (2026 will mark its 28th edition) – Thousands of young masked participants from across the region fill Opatija’s streets with colour\, music\, and cheer\, creating a vibrant celebration of creativity and playfulness.\nBalinjerada (43rd edition in 2026) – A unique race where participants ride home-made vehicles with ball-bearing wheels down Opatija’s main street. Created in 1983 by musician Duško Jeličić Dule\, it’s a mix of tradition\, ingenuity\, and carnival spirit\, with awards for speed\, design\, and originality.\n\nOther highlights include the Masked Klapa Marathon\, where vocal groups in costume perform popular songs with humour and carnival flair. \nOpatija Carnival is more than an event – it’s an experience\, a celebration of togetherness\, and proof that laughter never goes out of style. SUMMARY:Losinj carnival
DESCRIPTION:Lošinj Carnival primary goal is to preserve the island’s cultural heritage and pass it on to younger generations. We achieve this through a series of activities and events that have become a recognizable part of the local community’s offerings during the winter months\, outside the tourist season. \nThrough its efforts\, the Association promotes the carnival tradition of the island of Lošinj in the media\, throughout the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County\, across Croatia\, and even beyond the country’s borders. \nThe Association begins its activities on the first Saturday after the feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot\, known locally as “Antonja.” The carnival season ends with a grand parade on Shrove Tuesday\, just before Ash Wednesday. \nTraditionally\, the masqueraders take over the city of Mali Lošinj through the symbolic handover of the city keys\, during which carnival participants humorously deliver the “Pust’s Message” to the people and local authorities. \nIn addition to the regular Saturday masked dances and the election of the Queen of the Lošinj Carnival – who represents both the Association and the city at the Queen of the Rijeka Carnival contest – the Association organizes four events unique to our island: \n•MareMonada – a race of non-motorized vessels held in the Augusta Bay\, right in the city center. This fun and exciting event brings together brave and creative participants who are not afraid to take a plunge into the winter sea. \n•Maškarani Caffè – a morning gathering in the city center\, on the terrace of Caffe Bar Moby Dick\, featuring coffee (or something stronger)\, fritule (traditional fried sweets)\, and carnival music. \n•Kroštulijada – a competition in preparing kroštule\, a traditional carnival pastry. The event takes place in the town square\, where each year we choose the juiciest and tastiest kroštule. \n•Pusni Tuesday – the central event of the carnival season\, when masqueraders and other participants completely take over the town. Following the grand parade\, the Pust’s Will is read – a humorous and often satirical reflection on the past year. \nFor many years\, we have proudly participated in the major International Rijeka Carnival\, where our striking costumes always attract great attention. \nOur activities do not end with the “fifth season” – we continue with humanitarian programs during Advent\, take part in the Losinava event\, and participate in numerous summer carnivals.

SUMMARY:Lugagnano carnival
DESCRIPTION:The Carnival of Lugagnano has legendary origins: it is said that many years ago\, a caravan of gypsies stopped in the Lugagnano plain so that women could give birth. They integrated with the locals and settled permanently. This legend is supported by the fact that in 1956 hundreds of gypsies stayed in Lugagnano for 15 days to celebrate the wedding of the daughter of the “Queen of the Gypsies of Europe.” \nIn 1979\, thanks to two friends from Lugagnano and the local parish priest\, the first parade was held. In 1980\, they created the carnival mask Lo Tzigano\, and since 1982 a “Tzigano” has been elected each year by the townspeople. Today\, Lugagnano’s Carnival is considered one of the best and most popular in the Province of Verona. \nThe next edition will take place March 13–15\, 2026: \n\n\nFriday\, March 13: Gala dinner of the associations \n\n\nSaturday\, March 14 (afternoon): Children’s costume party \n\n\nSunday\, March 15 (from 2:00 p.m.): Carnival parade \n\n\n\nTiziano Zocca\nPresident\nAssociazione Carnevale Benefico lo TziganoEmail: info@tzigano.it\n\n
