The Carnival of Lugagnano has legendary origins: it is said that many years ago, a caravan of gypsies stopped in the Lugagnano plain so that women could give birth. They integrated with the locals and settled permanently. This legend is supported by the fact that in 1956 hundreds of gypsies stayed in Lugagnano for 15 days to celebrate the wedding of the daughter of the “Queen of the Gypsies of Europe.”
In 1979, thanks to two friends from Lugagnano and the local parish priest, the first parade was held. In 1980, they created the carnival mask Lo Tzigano, and since 1982 a “Tzigano” has been elected each year by the townspeople. Today, Lugagnano’s Carnival is considered one of the best and most popular in the Province of Verona.
