Pag summer carnival

The Pag Carnival is one of the most cherished traditions of the island’s community — a time for gathering, celebration, and preserving the cultural heritage that “Pažani” proudly uphold. Its history stretches back for centuries, even being mentioned in the Statute of Pag Municipality from 1433.
Today, the town celebrates both a Winter Carnival (held since at least 1884 in its current form) and a Summer Carnival (the oldest in Croatia, dating from 1959).
Central to the festivities are unique local customs such as Rićavac, Paška robinja, Paško kolo, traditional songs, the “funeral” and burning of Marko, folk costumes, and Paški tanac.
Since 1998, the Carnival Association Markova kumpanija — a proud FECC member — has worked to safeguard and promote these traditions, engaging both locals and visitors in the vibrant spirit of Pag. Through parades, concerts, exhibitions, children’s festivals, and cultural exchanges with other carnival cities, the association has brought Pag’s carnival heritage to national and international audiences.
Whether in the depths of winter or under the summer sun, the Pag Carnival transforms the town into a stage of colour, music, and joy — an unmissable highlight of Croatia’s carnival calendar.
