Rijeka Carnival

The Rijeka Carnival, known as the city’s “fifth season,” is a centuries-old tradition held annually from January 17th (St. Anthony’s Day) until the start of Lent. In its modern form, it began in 1982, initiated by three masked groups – the Halubje Bell Ringers, Pehlin’s Party People, and the “No Problem” group – with the support of the Tourist Board.
The program features a series of cultural, entertainment, and sporting events, culminating in the Children’s Carnival Parade and the International Carnival Parade. The Children’s Parade brings together thousands of youngsters in colorful costumes and allegorical floats, while the grand finale showcases lavish costumes, elaborate floats, and carnival groups from Rijeka, the surrounding area, and abroad.
The Carnival is a symbol of Rijeka’s identity – a blend of tradition, creativity, and community – and one of the city’s most recognizable brands, inviting everyone to experience its famous motto: “Better to die than to surrender!”
